Man appears in court charged with 1984 Kennington murder

A man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with murdering a man 38 years ago.

Paul Bryan, 61, allegedly stabbed 63-year-old Roman Szalajko to death on February 7 1984 in Seaton Close, Kennington, south east London.

Bryan, of Shepherd’s Bush, west London, was arrested when he returned to the UK on a flight from Spain on Saturday November 19.

He appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, wearing a black hoodie, charged with murder and possessing or controlling identity documents with intent.

The second charge alleged that Bryan possessed or controlled a passport to “establish personal information” between October 2012 and November 2022.

The court heard the offences were “too serious” to be dealt with by magistrates and the case was sent to the Old Bailey.

Bryan was remanded in custody ahead of the next hearing on Thursday November 24.

Mr Szalajko’s family have been informed of the arrest and charge.
