I’m a Celebrity’s Boy George and his south east London life

One of this year’s contestants heading into the jungle for I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! grew up in South-East London.

Boy George, 61, whose real name is George O’Dowd, rose to fame after spending his childhood in Eltham during the New Romantic era of British pop in the early 1980s.

The Karma Chameleon star was born in Bexley, Kent, grew up in Eltham and then moved near to Woolwich when he was 11.

Boy George was one of six children and attended Middle Park infant school and then Eltham Green Secondary School.

He has said that while he loved infant school, he did not feel prepared for the change from primary to secondary school.

Growing up, Boy George has said that he was fascinated with Shirley Bassey and Joan Collins and that fans can expect some Shirley Bassey impressions in the jungle.

The Culture Club star has proven to be a big personality on the show so far, clashing with former health secretary after he arrived late to the jungle.

He also shocked viewers in a recent episode by revealing that he has a hair transplant inspired by the footballer Wayne Rooney.

He told his campmates that he had been “bald” before undergoing the procedure.

After removing his oversized hat, a trademark accessory for many years, he was asked by England footballer Jill Scott where he had the procedure done.

“At the hair transplant shop,” he jokingly responded.

The singer added: “I was bald. Do you know what made me do it? Wayne Rooney.”

Responding to laughs from his campmates, he said: “Why do you think that is funny? It’s the truth.

“I saw Wayne Rooney’s hair and I thought I could actually get my hair done.”

At the suggestion he was “rebuilding himself” he added: “I am Darth Vader.”

Thanks to hits including Do You Really Want to Hurt Me? and Karma Chameleon, he and Culture Club were regular fixtures in the charts.

Boy George is most well-known for his soulful voice and androgynous appearance, inspired by glam rock pioneers such as David Bowie.

In 2009, Boy George was sentenced to 15 months in prison for assault and false imprisonment.

He was released with an ankle monitor after four months.
