Arsenal now ‘very confident’ of agreeing deal for £27m star

Arsenal are ‘very confident’ that defender William Saliba will sign a new long-term contract with the club, says journalist Paul Brown.

What is William Saliba’s contract situation?

William Saliba signed for Arsenal in the summer of 2019 fro Saint-Etienne, with Sky Sports reporting at the time the Frenchman had inked a ‘long-term’ contract with the club for £27m.

Saliba wouldn’t kick a ball for the Gunners for three seasons, as he spent time on loan back in France. First with Saint-Etienne, then a season at Nice, before his standout campaign with Marseille last year where he was named Ligue 1’s Young Player of the Season.

Following a successful start in North London at the start of 2022-23, the club are keen to tie defender down to new long-term deal, with reports from The Athletic stating that his contract actually expires next summer rather than in 2024 as first reported.

What does Brown say about the new contract offer?

Even with Saliba’s deal set to expire next summer, Paul Brown says the Gunners believe the 21-year-old will sign a new deal.

Brown told GIVEMESPORT: “They are very confident that Saliba will commit. He’s in the team now playing very well, seems very happy, and they’re optimistic that there won’t be any problems there.”

What can Saliba achieve this season?

Saliba made his Arsenal debut on the first day of the season, putting in a man of the match display as the Gunners beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at Selhurst Park – and he hasn’t looked back since.

The defender scored his first goal two weeks later, in the victory over Bournemouth, and has been an ever-present in the Arsenal team that currently sits on top of the Premier League table, two points clear of champions Manchester City.

What year was the club founded?

1880

1882

1884

1886

His displays haven’t gone unnoticed either, with the centre-back included in France’s squad for this month’s World Cup in Qatar and Real Madrid and PSG already keeping an eye on his contract situation at The Emirates.

With France one of the strong favourites for the tournament, there could be success both domestically and internationally for Saliba, in what could be a memorable season for the player.

Saliba’s partnership at the back with Gabriel has become the bedrock that Arsenal’s impressive start to this season has been built on, which is why the North London side are keen to get him to sign a new deal.
