The Minstermen shared the points against Boreham Wood as they were held to a 1-1 draw at LV Bet Stadium Meadow Park.

City went ahead after only ten minutes through Lenell John-Lewis’ penalty, but they were penned back by the home side five minutes into the second half through former City player Jamal Fyfield’s goal.

In only the third-ever meeting between the two sides, both went into the game looking for a crucial three points which would put them in with a good chance of remaining intact with the National League playoff positions.

The Minstermen were narrowly beaten at the weekend by League One side Shrewsbury Town in the Emirates FA Cup and John Askey was hoping his side could return to winning ways as they travelled down to the Capital.

In their way stood a Boreham Wood, who sat in the final National League playoff position, who came into this game full of confidence after they booked their place in the 2nd Round of the Cup at the weekend with victory over Eastleigh.

Askey named two changes to his starting eleven from the one that featured against Shrewsbury at the weekend. John-Lewis and Olly Dyson returned to the starting eleven, who replaced Maziar Kouhyar and Manny Duku, whilst there was a place on the bench for winger Alex Hurst who returned from suspension.

The home side had an immediate chance to take the lead inside three minutes in North London after the ball fell to the feet of forward Danny Lewis inside the area after good work by Lee Ndlovu down the right, but a brilliant block by Michael Duckworth cleared the shot away from goal and City escaped away from danger.

City were awarded a penalty in the tenth minute after Luke James was taken down inside the penalty area by Fyfield. Captain John-Lewis was on hand to bury his penalty into the bottom-left corner to hand the away side an early lead with his eight goal of the season.

Ethan Ross got down quickly to deny midfielder George Broadbent moments later after he went racing through on goal as his side looked for an equaliser, before James fired an effort narrowly wide of goal after a brilliant counter-attack by the Minstermen.

Attacking midfielder Zak Brunt fired an effort from distance straight into Ross’ gloves which he was able to easily parry away from danger, before wing-back Cameron Coxe tried his luck from out wide with a cross-shot, but his effort went well over the bar from distance.

The home side levelled the game five minutes into the second half through Fyfield, who bundled the ball home at the third attempt from close-range after Danny Newton had originally hit the post from the edge of the area on the half-volley, before the rebound was excellently blocked by Ross in the build-up.

Only two minutes after conceding, John-Lewis was found in a central position after good work down the right by Ryan Fallowfield, but the forward curled his effort over the bar from close-range as the Minstermen looked for an immediate fightback.

James had a low shot blocked from the edge of the area after twisting and turning through the Boreham Wood defence, before Ross reacted quick to tip over a strike from distance from Boreham Wood’s Dennon Lewis.

The home side continued to press forward as they looked to take the lead, but Michael Duckworth showed pure strength as he put his body on the line to deflect a fierce strike from Ndlovu away for a corner after a great ball in from the right.

York had a chance themselves moments later as they looked for a second goal, as John-Lewis curled an effort from distance towards goal, but his effort was easily saved by Boreham Wood ‘keeper Nathan Ashmore.

Pybus went close with a volley from the edge of the area for the Minstermen, but he wasn’t able to find a winner as York were made to settle for a point in North London.

One final chance fell to the home side in second-half injury time, but Ross reacted smartly to deny subsitute Josh Rees after he shot on the turn well inside the penalty area.

York are back in action at the weekend when they take on Altrincham as the J Davidson Stadium in front of the BT Sport cameras in the Vanarama National League (5:20pm kick-off).
