Heatherwick is working up plans for an “organic-looking” boutique hotel in East London, Building Design understands.
The practice is in pre-application meetings with Hackney council on the scheme, which is being developed by a private investor and would be located on Richmond Road in London Fields.
There are few hotels designed by high-profile architects in East London compared to the western half of the capital. Ben Adams’ Architects’ Nobu Hotel and the Mondrian were both completed in Shoreditch in 2017, and Sheppard Robson was given the green light for a 15-storey hotel in Aldgate in July.
It would also be one of just a handful of Heatherwick projects in the capital. The practice’s most notable project in London is its £1bn Google office ‘landscraper’ in King’s Cross.
It is also working with SPPARC on a £1bn overhaul of Kensington’s Olympia London venue which will see the construction of two hotels, two theatres, a cinema and office space.
Heatherwick’s most recent London project was the temporary ‘Tree of Trees’ sculpture erected outside the gates of Buckingham Palace for Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee in June.
The 21m tall sculpture housed 350 native British trees in a steel and timber frame and was designed to promote a national tree planting project.
