Michael Gove said that “boring is back” during a speech in central London after returning to the cabinet yesterday to his former job as levelling up secretary.

The former journalist told London Press Club Awards attendees that he believed Rishi Sunak as prime minister would end months of instability.

Mr Gove said he was “grateful” that Mr Sunak on Tuesday stressed “that after 12 months of turbulence, after a rolling news buffet, an all-you-can eat story extravaganza, that boring is back”.

He joked that he would apologise to the media for the government’s “utter determination to try to be as dull as possible”.

But it comes amid a row over Mr Sunak reinstalling Suella Braverman as home secretary just six days after she resigned over a security breach when Liz Truss was PM.

During PMQs, Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer suggested Ms Braverman and Mr Sunak had struck a “grubby deal” to enable them to take office.

Also the Commons, Cabinet Office minister Jeremy Quin suggested that it would “not be proper” to probe “events in the last administration”.

LGBT fans should be ‘respectful’ of Qatar during World Cup, UK foreign secretary says

The Foreign Secretary has been criticised for saying LGBT football fans should be “respectful” during the World Cup.

James Cleverly said visitors to host country Qatar should show “a little bit of flex and compromise” and to “respect the culture of your host nation”.

Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar and can be punished by imprisonment or even death under the country’s criminal code.

The Tory politician’s comments were branded “abhorrent” and “shockingly tone deaf” by opposition parties, who said the government should be challenging football authorities over the selection of the country to host the tournament.

“I have spoken to the Qatari authorities in the past about gay football fans going to watch the World Cup and how they will treat our fans and international fans,” Mr Clevely told LBC radio.

It was ‘mistake’ to back Truss, says Sajid Javid

Former Chancellor Sajid Javid said he made a “mistake” in backing Liz Truss for the Tory leadership.

“In hindsight I made a mistake, I think many of us did,” he told LBC’s Tonight with Andrew Marr programme – adding that Ms Truss “didn’t show any respect” for the country’s “key economic institutions”.

Mr Javid also commented on reports that Ms Truss and her sacked chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng were no longer speaking saying, “If that is the case… I hope they can get back together one day and become friends again.”

Reflecting on his own relationship with Boris Johnson, after calling on him to quit in early July, Mr Javid said he still thinks of the former PM as a friend but that “you can understand why he might take a different point of view”.

Inspector tells MPs he was ‘speechless’ by Kent migrant facility

A watchdog said he was left “speechless” by the “pretty wretched” conditions at a migrant processing centre in Kent.

Chief inspector of borders and immigration David Neal told MPs that he wrote to the home secretary about his concerns over the conditions at the Ministry of Defence’s former site in Manston.

Migrants are meant to be held at the short-term holding facility, which opened in January, for 24 hours while they undergo checks before being moved into immigration detention centres or asylum accommodation – currently hotels.

It was originally meant to hold between 1,000 and 1,600 people but Mr Neal said there were 2,800 people at the site when he visited on Monday, with more due to arrive.

The lack of officers and guards to match the number of people was “sufficiently alarming” he told the Commons Home Affairs Committee, adding: “When I discovered that I was frankly speechless and I’m not someone who is normally speechless.”

Mr Neal said: “I spoke to an Afghan family who had been in a marquee for 32 days. So that’s in a marquee … with a kit mats on the floor, with blankets, for 32 days.”

“It’s a really dangerous situation. It’s failing to address vulnerability … There are risks there in terms of fire, in terms of disorder, in terms of medical and infection,” he also said.

Mr Neal said there was a “creeping lack of ambition from the Home Office” over Manston.

Braverman’s ‘disregard for ethics hangover from Johnson days’

Wera Hobhouse said Suella Braverman should do more than apologise for breaking the ministerial code and that there should be an inquiry into her breach of security.

During an urgent question in the Commons, the Liberal Democrat MP criticised Ms Braverman’s reappointment as home secretary six days after resigning over the breach.

In response to Ms Hobhouse, Cabinet Office minister Jeremy Quin said an apology was the appropriate response in this case and that Ms Braverman’s reappointment was totally justifiable.

In a statement, Ms Hobhouse wrote: “Suella Braverman’s apology is not enough. Breaking something as important to our standards in public life as the Ministerial Code requires a stronger sanction than a half-hearted apology and a week-long hiatus from the job.

“This disregard for ethics and any level of decency is a hangover from the Johnson days and the Conservative party simply cannot shake the rotten culture that he embedded.

“Rishi Sunak has said that it is his intention to finally reappoint an ethics advisor, my only hope is that he does so quickly because attitudes to public office as improper as this cannot be allowed to fester. What is needed is an inquiry.”
