Chelsea now targeting ‘ambitious’ move for £40m star at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea are set to target Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes in an ambitious transfer ahead of the January window, as their list of targets grows longer, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

Chairman and co-owner Todd Boehly oversaw a summer spend of more than £250 million but further investment is now on the horizon at Stamford Bridge.

What is the latest transfer news from Chelsea?

According to The Telegraph, the Blues are eager to bolster their midfield options moving forward with Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice reported as targets.

The same story details that Boehly and the board are also plotting to sign RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol.

It would mean the Croatian potentially joining his current teammate Christopher Nkunku, who is understood to have penned a pre-contract agreement with Chelsea ahead of next summer.

Meanwhile, the Blues are monitoring the situation of Graham Potter’s former Brighton star Moises Caicedo ahead of a potential bid.

What has Phillips said on their transfer plans?

Phillips understands that a number of midfielders are on the club’s wishlist ahead of the January transfer window.

The journalist adds that Newcastle star Guimaraes – who only made a £40 million move to Newcastle in January – has also now been targeted, along with Ajax’s Edson Alvarez who was previously coveted in the summer.

Phillips told GIVEMESPORT: “I’ve been told at the moment, Chelsea are looking at Edson Alvarez from Ajax, Moises Caicedo from Brighton, Weston McKennie from Juventus, and Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle. The latter seems ambitious. Chelsea have a shortlist of midfielders they are looking at for a priority area in January, and again in the summer. Declan Rice is more possible come the summer rather than in January, same goes for Jude Bellingham, but I think he goes to either Liverpool or Real Madrid.”

Why are Chelsea targeting new midfielders?

Despite boasting the likes of Jorginho, N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Conor Gallagher and Carney Chukwuemeka, it is understandable why the Blues are looking to bolster this area.

For starters, their two most experienced options – Kante and Jorginho – are both set to become free agents when their contracts expire at the end of the season, potentially leaving Potter with a rebuilding job.

While Loftus-Cheek, Gallagher and Chukwuemeka have all impressed on occasion this term, there could still be some uncertainty over whether the trio are ready to cut it on a regular basis in west London.

Adding some competition to the group could be key.
