Lewisham Indian named south London’s takeaway of the year

An Indian takeaway in Lewisham has been crowned the regional takeaway of the year for south London at the Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards 2022.

Curry World, which is located in Blackheath, was declared the winner on Sunday (October 2) at an awards ceremony at the InterContinental Hotel in Greenwich.

This event is the largest annual celebration of Britain’s vibrant Asian restaurants and takeaway industry.

Curry World says that it lets you “experience Indian cuisine like the Maharajah’s from Mughal dynasty in the comfort of your own home” and has a “range of great tasting authentic Indian dishes cooked to the highest standard with recipes dating back centuries”.

The takeaway has been running for more than ten years and is located next to Sainsbury’s in Blackheath.

Signature dishes include chicken tikka masala, kata ghust bhuna and shahi poneer kurma.

One Google review reads: The Indian food has so much flavour and the customer service is A*! This is my new spot.”

Another said: “Incredible! Incredible! The best feel good kind of curry that really packs amazing flavour.

“I would 100 per cent recommend and revisit many many times over.”

The ARTA awards were hosted by Samantha Simmonds, BBC journalist and broadcaster, and Paul Martin, magician and member of the world-famous Magic Circle.

The awards recognise the best of the UK’s South Asian cuisine and have both regional and national categories.

The winners were selected by a panel of ambassadors and judges which included Chand Rahman, executive chef and multi award-winning celebrity chef; Mohammed Mujibur Rahman, Ex-Mayor of Corby; and Graham Taylor, senior chef lecturer at Cambridge Regional College.

Restaurants were awarded based on three key factors: quality of food, quality of service, and value for money, followed by the ARTA score, which includes food hygiene rating and reviews from websites like TripAdvisor and Google.

Restaurants that made it through the first phase were judged and invited to participate in a cook-off competition where they were judged on flavour, appearance, texture, hygiene, and aroma More than 2,370 restaurants and takeaways across the UK that were nominated by the restaurant goers and food lovers.

“Since the inception of ARTA, we have clearly seen the phenomenal quality of entrants, and the bar set by each, and every nominee has been increasing each year.

“I am truly blown away by the standards set by the competition and having been privy to exceptional quality and service extended by the nominees, I can confidently assert that Asian culinary industry in Britain is in safe hands.
