After a year of extensive research and collaboration, an NHS supported Breast Cancer Screening campaign offering inclusivity and diversity for LGBTIQ+ people is due to launch this October, coinciding with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A partnership between the UK’s only LGBTIQ+ cancer charity, Live Through This and the North East London Cancer Alliance, the campaign aims to increase engagement with, and attendance of Breast Cancer Screening across the LGBTIQ+community.

Best For My Chest will not only revolutionise communication around Breast Cancer Screening, but it will also educate and inform whilst alleviating concerns and fears of what to expect at a screening appointment. Breast Cancer Screening is the ideal tool to detect breast cancer early, especially over the age of 50. Screening can identify early cases of cancer, which in turn will lead to quicker and less intrusive treatment, better outcomes for the patient and ultimately will save many lives.

The Best for my Chest campaign has been developed with the community to remove communication barriers around Breast Cancer Screening to those who may feel disconnected from current cancer campaigns. The eye-catching campaign uses people from the LGBTIQ+ community, both in front of camera and behind camera, to bring it to life and deliver the lifesaving messaging needed to the LGBTIQ+ community.

Stewart O’Callaghan, CEO of Live Through This explains why this campaign is so important to them and the community: “Breast cancer screening saves lives. But our community can face multiple barriers when trying to access this vital service. Whether they face issues with receiving an invitation, have fears about the appointment or just feel disconnected from the usual messaging and campaigns. That is why it is vital for our community to know that this service is for them, and they will be treated with respect when they use it.”

The Best for my Chest campaign has been funded and collaboratively supported by the NHS. Jake Chambers, Project Manager from North East London Cancer Alliance, comments on why this campaign is so important to the NHS: “We are very excited to partner with Live Through This to launch this important campaign to improve the health outcomes of the LGBTIQ+ community. We know that breast cancer screening saves lives. We also know that people from the LGBTIQ+ community face many barriers when accessing healthcare and the pandemic has only served to exacerbate existing health inequalities.

“What is really exciting about this campaign is that we have also put together a comprehensive LGBTIQ+ training offer for the breast screening services and the GPs of north east London, so they feel better equipped to support the needs of our LGBTIQ+ communities. It is important that when anyone comes forward for their breast screening or sees their GP if they notice a lump or change to their chest, they know they can expect to be treated with the respect and dignity they deserve, regardless of their gender or sexuality.”

Live Through This and the North East London Cancer Alliance are hosting a special preview evening for members of the LGBTIQ+ community in Glass House, Shoreditch on October 6th at 18:30 at the Glass House, Shoreditch. Attendees will be the first to see the incredible work that has produced around such an important initiative, meet the charity and North East London Cancer Alliance project team, and meet the real people who have brought the campaign to life.
