Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger has admitted he enjoyed ‘winding people up’ on the pitch to liven up the home side when fans were ‘too quiet’ at Stamford Bridge.

Rudiger swapped the blue of west London for the white of Madrid this summer – leaving the Premier League outfit on a free transfer.

It brought an end to five seasons at Stamford Bridge where the centre back won the Champions League, FA Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, Europa League and the UEFA Super Cup.

The Germany international proved a fan favourite at Chelsea but did have his eccentric moments in their backline.

And now the 29-year-old has admitted that he would deliberately cause chaos by ‘having fun’ and winding people up to stir Chelsea fans when he felt they were too quiet during matches.

Citing last season’s dramatic 1-0 Premier League victory over Newcastle in March, which saw Kai Havertz score an 89th-minute winner, Rudiger – who was booked in this match – points to this fixture as one he was deliberately careless in.

‘I’ll be honest: I deliberately wound people up because it was just too quiet in the stadium for me during this game,’ he told German outlet Sport1.

‘I wanted to wake people up with it.’

Rudiger has revealed he loved being a source of contention to opposing players.

Talking about winding up rivals, Rudiger added: ‘I like to analyse my opponents and think to myself: “Okay, let’s see how they react if I provoke them a bit”.

‘But it’s not like I pick someone before every game. That happens spontaneously.’

Since leaving Chelsea, Rudiger has made nine appearances for LaLiga and Champions League holders Real Madrid so far as he eases into the starting XI.
