Highly-rated Championship full-back Alex Walker has put pen to paper on a new deal with London Broncos and described playing for his boyhood club as a “true honour”.
The 27-year-old made his Broncos debut in September 2014 and played his 100th game for them earlier this season when re-signing after spells with Wakefield Trinity, Featherstone Rovers and Halifax Panthers.
Broncos Academy graduate Walker scored 14 tries in 23 appearances through 2022 and hopes his positive relationship with director of rugby and performance Mike Eccles can help him play to his true potential.
“Rugby League and London Broncos have both been a huge part of my life,” said Walker. “To represent the badge and step out on the field is an honour, and I’m pleased to be part of the club’s plans for 2023.
“I’ve worked with Mike for many years now and have built a strong working relationship and understanding of how he likes to operate.
“It’s always a good sign to work with someone who shares your passion and knowledge of the club, so re-signing was a no-brainer really. I’d like to think with a productive pre-season under our belts, we can carry the form we showed in flashes during the second part of this year into 2023.
“It’s an exciting time and I’d like to thank Mike and the team for this opportunity.”
Walker played a pivotal role in the club’s spine this season which impressed Eccles.
He hopes to retain Walker’s services in the long-term by building the team around his technical and physical abilities. Transitioning academy graduates from youth to first-team Rugby League is another one of Eccles’ key targets.
He added: “We’re very lucky to have Alex in the team, he’s an unbelievable player. I was chuffed to have him return to the squad earlier this season.
“I want Alex to be a player we can build our team around not only for next season but in the long-term. We want to continue producing high-quality players from our academy, but then retaining them as they transition to playing senior Rugby League too.
“Having players in your team who have already developed a touch point with the first-team coaching staff is beneficial. They understand the club and how we want to move forwards.
“Alex is a huge coup for us, and we’re sure the supporters will share our excitement when reading the news.”
