It’s Real Outside opens September at Deptford X Festival fringe – South London News

The Deptford X Festival fringe is now in its sixth year.

As part of the cultural festivities, gallery space dept.con.temporary will play host to an exhibition of 19 local artists.

The enigmatically named It’s Real Outside will feature work in a range of styles, such as paintings, moving images, sculpture and ceramics.

Founded in 2021 out of their flat in Deptford High Street, artists Karolina Glusiec and Jamie Temple created the gallery with the intention of working with artists in a sustainable fashion, supporting new contemporary art.

They said “Our aim is to enable artists and makers living and working in South-east London to showcase works and projects in a way that is sensitive to and reflective of their needs.

“We are working towards creating sustainable ways in which to make and share work, opening up our space as a platform for new contemporary art in all its forms to local artists and makers.”

Artists on show include the painter Joshua Armitage.

He produces images of the urban and natural landscape, often using broad brushstrokes and geometrically confused closeups of buildings.

Nathalie Coste is a self-described futuristic craft woman.

Her playful installations include a colourful sea creature made from wool felt, left to look as though it has washed up on the beach.

Clara Kelly makes deceptively twee, Grayson Perry-esque objects, using recycled and repurposed materials.

A selection of the artworks will be available to buy during a timed auction, in collaboration with The Auction Collective.

The proceeds will support the gallery’s existence, as well as the artists themselves.

It will enable dept.con.temporary to continue hosting exhibitions, screenings and discussions.

They will also be hosting ‘It’s Real Inside’, a live streamed life drawing class run by exhibiting artist Lily Holder and London Drawing Group.

It’s Real Outside is open on September, 16, 17, 22, 23, and 24 and October 1 from noon-6pm.
