West Ham ‘interested’ in signing £22.5m England star at London Stadium

West Ham United have ‘got an interest’ in Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher after they sealed the signing of Emerson Palmieri on Tuesday, according to Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.

The 22-year-old appears to be a part of Thomas Tuchel’s first-team plans at this moment in time, but that could change between now and the transfer window closing on September 1.

What is the latest news involving Gallagher?

Gallagher impressed throughout a season-long loan spell with Crystal Palace last season, with Tuchel claiming during pre-season that he can be a ‘big asset’ for Chelsea.

However, that has not stopped several Premier League teams from testing the water in west London as they look to bolster their engine room options.

Earlier this month, The Guardian reported that West Ham have ‘enquired about a deal’ for Gallagher, but were told that the England international is not interested in leaving Stamford Bridge.

And 90min have claimed that Crystal Palace and Newcastle United have also asked Chelsea about Gallagher’s availability only to be met with a similar response.

The box-to-box dynamo was handed his first start for his boyhood club last time out, yet it ended in disaster after he was substituted in the 64th minute as Leeds United romped to a 3-0 victory.

What has Sheth said about Gallagher?

Sheth believes West Ham’s pursuit of Gallagher is ‘maybe one to keep an eye on’ between now and the end of the summer window.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “One potentially to look out for, even though he did start the game for Chelsea against Leeds on Sunday, is Conor Gallagher.

“And I know West Ham United have got an interest in him. Whether Chelsea will allow that deal to happen is another matter, but it’s maybe one to keep an eye on.”

Would Gallagher be a good signing?

Gallagher made a name for himself at Selhurst Park last term, registering eight goals and five assists in 39 appearances as Palace finished in 12th position while reaching the FA Cup semi-finals.

As per FBref, the 5 foot 11 ace has also ranked in the 94th percentile for non-penalty expected goals, 93rd for pressures, 92nd for completed dribbles and touches in the attacking penalty area, and 88th for total shots and progressive passes received amongst his positional peers over the last year.

Gallagher, who is valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, still has three years left to run on his £32,000-per-week contract, though, meaning a loan deal is perhaps more likely than a permanent switch.
