Tottenham Hotspur have registered an interest in signing Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah this summer, according to The Evening Standard.

Tottenham have already brought in Clement Lenglet from Barcelona on a season-long loan deal to bolster their defence (Daily Mail).

However, they have also moved out Joe Rodon from their backline on loan to Stade Rennes with an option to make it permanent for £17million (The Sun).

AC Milan have restarted negotiations with Spurs for Japhet Tanganga recently (Gianluca Di Marzio) and, should he depart, the North London side may lack depth across their three central defensive positions.

However, it looks like Antonio Conte’s team is aware of the problem and have turned their attention towards Chalobah. Inter Milan have already shown interest in signing him, while AS Roma have joined the race alongside Tottenham.

The Englishman is currently assessing his future at Stamford Bridge, and he could push for a loan exit or a permanent departure in search of more game time.

The Blues have been strongly chasing after Leicester City’s Wesley Fofana, who has agreed to personal terms ahead of a possible move (Fabrizio Romano).

That pursuit is said to have caused concerns with Chalobah regarding game time, but the 23-year-old is tied down for four more seasons, which does put Thomas Tuchel’s team in the driving seat when it comes to any negotiations.

Spurs Web Opinion:

Tottenham could use some reinforcements in their backline as it is necessary to have at least six centre-halves in total to utilise a three-at-the-back formation. That is especially the case during a long season, especially now that Conte is allowed to make five substitutions during matches.

Chalobah has enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in west London even if his prominence died down in the latter stages of the previous season. Chelsea are known for losing future stars in the making, and the defender could follow in the footsteps of Fikayo Tomori. Whether Spurs could ever get a good deal from a London rival remains to be seen.
