After admitting Leeds “got in touch” with him, Arsenal target wants Old Trafford move

According to ESPN, Cody Gakpo now wants to join Manchester United despite interest from Arsenal and Leeds.

What’s the story?

Well, the Netherlands international himself admitting that Leeds “got in touch” with him about a move to Elland Road, as Jesse Marsch aims to improve his attacking options.

Elsewhere, Arsenal are looking at Gakpo after losing out on Raphinha to Barcelona.

Now, however, both Leeds and Arsenal should prepare themselves for disappointment.

ESPN believe Gakpo is keen to make the move to Old Trafford if PSV Eindhoven can agree a deal with Manchester United.

The 23-year-old is valued at £35m by the Eredivisie side, and ESPN have been told that they will accept nothing less for one of their best players.

Manchester United have turned their attention to the Arsenal and Leeds target after missing out on Benjamin Sesko to RB Leipzig, while Ajax also priced them out of a move for Anthony.

Erik ten Hag was supposedly impressed by Gakpo during his time in charge of Ajax, and he remains interested after the Dutchman scored twice in PSV Eindhoven’s 4-1 opening day win over FC Emmen.

Interest in the Eindhoven-born forward comes after he impressively scored 21 goals in 46 appearances last season, while also providing 15 assists.

Arsenal, Leeds or Manchester United could sign a gem

In our view, Gakpo will follow in the footsteps of Luis Suarez and Robin van Persie in leaving the Eredivisie to become a superstar of European football.

36 goal involvements in 46 appearances is not normal, let alone for a 23-year-old, so whoever gets their hands on the PSV Eindhoven No.11 could be getting a generational talent.

In our view, we would avoid a move to Old Trafford if we were Gakpo, as it seems a very toxic place at the moment.

A switch to Elland Road would be interesting, although Gakpo would probably be best served at Arsenal, where Mikel Arteta is heavily reliant upon young players, and trusts them to start on a weekly basis.

Despite his desire to join Manchester United, a move to north London would surely be far more beneficial for the forward’s development – ultimately, only time will tell where he ends up.
