Chelsea hold talks to sign player who Tottenham sold in 2020

According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have held internals talks over a deal for Kyle Walker-Peters, who Tottenham sold in 2020.

What’s the story?

Well, Thomas Tuchel is keen to sign a new right wing-back to compete with Reece James.

Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries is being considered, although Romano believes internal talks have now taken place at Stamford Bridge over a deal for Walker-Peters.

The England international emerged from the Tottenham Academy before he was sold to Southampton in August 2020 for a sum of £12m under José Mourinho.

Since leaving Spurs, Walker-Peters has developed tremendously, earning international recognition as the Saints slap a £40m price tag on his head.

Romano believes Inter Milan want to keep Dumfries, so if the Italian giants play hardball, Tottenham fans may end up seeing one of their own play for their bitter London rivals.

Interest in Walker-Peters comes after he shone for Southampton in the 2021/22 campaign, scoring two goals while also providing four assists in 37 appearances.

Tottenham should’ve kept Chelsea target

In our view, Tottenham shouldn’t have sold Walker-Peters. At the very least, Spurs should’ve placed a buyback clause in the deal with Southampton.

The 25-year-old has developed into one of the leading right-backs in the Premier League, and the irony here is that Antonio Conte is still looking for another right wing-back after signing Djed Spence.

According to some sources, Wolves speedster Adama Traore is a potential option, while Conte believes Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo can also shine as a wing-back.

Had Spurs kept Walker-Peters, they wouldn’t be in a position where they feel the need to revamp their entire right wing-back department.

Tottenham have failed miserably in their hunt to replace Kyle Walker and Walker-Peters, as the likes of Serge Aurier, Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal have all struggled in north London.

Now, Tottenham fans could have salt rubbed in the wound by seeing Chelsea snap up their one that got away.
