Grass fire breaks out near Green Man Interchange in Leytonstone

Firefighters have been tackling a grass fire near a major junction today (July 19).

The fire broke out in Bush Road near the Green Man Interchange, Leytonstone, this morning (July 19).

A traffic camera showed smoke filling the air on the roundabout where the A12 meets the A114 Bush Road just before 10am.

Bush Road has been closed by emergency services between High Road and Blake Hall Road – and remains shut as of 12.35pm.

Traffic on the A12 seems to be unaffected but there are queues in Bush Road and in High Road.

Waltham Forest Council tweeted: “Delays in the Leytonstone area due to grass fire, please avoid if possible.”

The fire comes as the UK officially records its hottest day ever.

The Met Office says a provisional temperature of 39.1C at Charlwood, Surrey, recorded today beats the previous national record of 38.7C seen in Cambridge in July 2019.

The Met Office is forecasting temperatures to reach as high as 41C on Tuesday in some parts of eastern England.

Much of England, including London, is under a “red” extreme heat warning until the end of Tuesday, with the heat causing disruption on transport networks and the risk of serious health impacts.
