The Liverpool Echo have revealed that the Everton hierarchy were furious after Tottenham made an attempt to take advantage of the club’s financial situation by signing Richarlison in a cut-price deal.

Tottenham confirmed the capture of Ricahrlison last week, with the North London club reportedly agreeing to pay up to £60m including add-ons for the versatile forward (Guardian).

Everton’s financial problems have been well documented this summer, and it was reported by The Mirror last week that the Toffees ran the risk of being sanctioned if they did not sell Richarlison by June 30 when the accounting year ends.

The Echo have now explained that the Brazilian sale did go through in time for it to be included within the annual set of accounts that ended last week, thus easing the Merseyside club’s financial issues.

However, it is revealed that Spurs tried to low-ball Everton by presenting an offer of just £40m at 4pm on June 30 for the 25-year-old.

The report claims that the Everton hierarchy saw this as an attempt to take advantage of their perilous situation and were furious at Tottenham.

The Echo add that the relationship between the two clubs has been damaged because of the way the negotiations over Richarlison unfolded.

This has Daniel Levy written all over it. The Spurs chairman is a ruthless negotiator and he is well capable of going back on his word in the final moment in order to squeeze a favourable deal.

If it is true that the relationship between the two clubs have been damaged, that likely does not bode well for any future moves for Anthony Gordon or Jordan Pickford.
