Orpington house fire: Around seventy firefighters tackle blaze in south east London | UK | News

The capital’s fire service revealed a fire erupted through a home in south east London in the early hours of the morning.

A large number of firefighters have assembled to tackle the blaze after the roof of the detached house caught alight.

In an update, the London Fire Brigade said: “Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters are tackling a blaze at a house in Chelsfield Hill, Orpington.

“The roof of the detached house is alight.

“The Brigade was called at 02:17am.

“Fire crews from Orpington, Biggin Hill, Bromley and surrounding stations are at the scene.

“The cause of the fire is not yet known.”

Station Commander Clive Robinson, who is at the scene, said: “Crews are working extremely hard to bring this large fire under control, and are expected to remain at the scene for some time.

“The fire is creating a lot of smoke and people in the nearby area should keep their windows and doors shut.”

However, London Fire Brigade has also warned the fire is likely to cause some traffic disruption in the local area and motorists are advised to check before they travel.

The warning comes as commuters across the capital and country deal with the ongoing rail strike.

Around 40,000 staff members from the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) ground the country to a halt over concerns about pay and work conditions, including on the Bromley-Kent border.
