Jack Wilshere stunned by how 18-goal Arsenal target is being treated

Jack Wilshere has been speaking to talkSPORT about James Maddison, after the Arsenal target was excluded by Gareth Southgate yet again.

What’s the story?

Well, it has been said that Mikel Arteta is keen to bring the Leicester No.10 to the Emirates Stadium.

Now, Wilshere – one of Arsenal’s own – has been speaking about the Leicester star, after he missed out on the UEFA Nations League friendlies with England.

The 30-year-old said: “It’s very harsh, especially on Maddison. It’s got to be personal. Chances created as well, he’s sixth in the whole Premier League. Sixth!”

Southgate has only given Maddison one cap for the Three Lions so far, and even that was just a 34-minute cameo against Montenegro, a game England won 7-0.

Last season, the 25-year-old impressively scored 18 goals in 52 appearances across all competitions for Leicester, while also providing 12 assists as the Foxes reached the UEFA Conference League semi-final.

Maddison outdid both Jack Grealish and Phil Foden in terms of goalscoring last season, as well as in regards to assists, so it really is baffling as to why Southgate continues to leave him out.

Arsenal may have to spend a fortune on James Maddison

In our view, the Gunners may have to break their club-record transfer fee if they are to bring Maddison to north London.

As we’ve seen in the past, Leicester can be very stubborn operators in the transfer market.

The Foxes received an eye-watering £85m from Manchester United for Harry Maguire, as well as £60m from Manchester City for Riyad Mahrez.

Seeing as Maddison has a contract running until June 2024 at the King Power Stadium, Brendan Rodgers is in a good position to demand whatever he wants for his star playmaker.

Whatever happens between him and Arsenal, it would be criminal for Southgate to leave Maddison out again if he continues to perform in this manner.
