The heartbreaking names and faces of the 24 children missing in London

7

According to the charity Missing People, of the 170,000 people reported missing on average each year, more than 70,000 are children. In London, there are currently 24 children missing from the capital’s street with little to any information on their current whereabouts.

One little girl was whisked away from her grandparents home in South London over 10 years ago, and has never been seen since. Whilst her dad has written over 1,000 letters seeking her return, her whereabouts remain a mystery. Other missing children include two 13-year-olds who disappeared from Rainham and Hillingdon, but despite their young age, there is very little information available about their last known sightings.

Whilst appeals have been made by the Metropolitan Police about several of the young teenagers who go missing in the capital, there are several children on this list who has received very little press or public attention since disappearing from their homes.

The charity Missing People keeps a record of every individual registered missing in the UK, and its search box can be filtered through location, age, gender and time since they were first reported by their loved ones.

Aamina Khan

Aamina Khan was only six years old when she disappeared from south London

Aamina Khan was last seen by her dad after he dropped her at her grandmother’s house in Morden so that she could spend time with her mum over the summer holidays. Safraz Khan, a doctor, had custody of his six-year-old daughter and lived with her in Croydon, but she regularly saw her mum on weekends.

In September 2011, he arrived to pick her up and realised something was wrong as his ex-wife and Aamina were nowhere to be found. Subsequent investigations have uncovered that Aamina was taken to Pakistan and despite Mr Khan’s numerous public appeals and searches, she has remained missing. By 2013, her dad had written over 1,000 letters to find her whereabouts and had launched criminal proceedings against those who helped her travel to Lahore.

In an interview with the Guardian, he said: “It’s the worst thing ever. Aamina was this happy, bubbly, talkative, active little girl and our bond was so close. Now I just go home to an empty house day after day, not knowing where she is, or if she’s even safe.”

If you have any information about Aamina’s location, contact Missing People with the reference number 12-001416.
