A 64-year-old man was rushed to hospital yesterday afternoon after being assaulted outside a bank on New Malden High Street in the middle of the day. Police and paramedics from the London Ambulance Service were called around 12:35pm on Wednesday (June 1) to find the man outside Nationwide Building Society.
He was taken to a South London hospital to be treated for a head injury where is current condition is unknown. Police immediately arrested a man, 49, on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and took him to a nearby police station where he remains in custody. Officers are still asking for any information which might aid their investigation.
A witness told MyLondon the alleged assault happened during an argument. Jas Channi said: “There was a big argument, two guys smashed someone else over the head. It was pretty horrific.” Another resident at the scene said they “saw a man on the floor bleeding from his head yesterday – people were assisting him as the police arrived, but I didn’t hear or see anything myself!”

In a statement, the Met Police said: “Police were called at about 12.35pm on Wednesday, 1 June to reports of an assault on High Street in New Malden. Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended. A 64-year-old man was taken to a south London hospital for treatment to a head injury; we await an update on his condition.
“A 49-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. He was taken to south London police station where he remains in custody. Anyone with information is asked to call police via 101 quoting reference CAD 3013/01Jun.”
