RideLondon crash sees air ambulance land and cyclists held in Essex

A cyclist on today’s RideLondon event crashed near Braintree in Essex and was rushed to hospital, causing riders to be held up for half an hour. An air ambulance and at least six emergency services vehicles were dispatched to the scene on mile 49 of the course and the rider was then taken to hospital by road.

The event has caused road closures around Central and East London and Essex, causing heavy traffic around Stratford in particular. Traffic service Inrix reports: “Closures include Victoria Embankment past the Tower of London to Victoria Docks, the A12 between Bow and Redbridge, and main routes via Epping and Stapleford Abbotts to Dunmow, Chelmsford and Braintree.”

In a statement, a RideLondon organiser said: “We can confirm that there has been an incident involving a rider requiring medical treatment at Mile 49 (near Stebbings Green). A medical team and an air ambulance attended and the rider was taken to hospital by road. The ride was held for about 30 minutes.”
