A man has been jailed after CCTV footage showed him pulling out a large machete and running towards a fight involving ten people in East London.
The Met police were called at 9.15pm on 7 June 2021 to the Kingsgate Estate on Tottenham Road following reports of a fight involving weapons, including machetes and a suspected firearm. Officers attended the scene but all those involved had left.
Police say the incident caused “genuine concern in the local community” with one witness telling officers they believed those present were “trying to take each other’s heads off”. A search of the area led police to a number of CCTV cameras that captured the fight.

Following a lengthy examination of the footage, police were able to identify 25-year-old Chinonye David Anyiam, from Hackney. He was sentenced to two-and-a-half years’ imprisonment at Wood Green Crown Court on Friday (May 27).
Anyiam told the court that he had been carrying an iPad in his waistband although in the footage he can clearly be seen pulling a large machete out of his waistband and running towards the group. A firearm can also be seen on the footage however it was not discharged.
Anyiam was identified during the investigation and arrested in July 2021. He had previously been convicted of violent disorder and possession of an offensive weapon on Friday, 13 May.
PC Cal Gregory, from the Hackney Gangs Task Force on the Central East Command Unit said: “Fights of this nature, involving weapons, can easily spread fear in our communities. The levels of violence and aggression should not, and will not, be tolerated.
“This investigation was made harder as no one came forward to identify themselves as a victim. However, that did not stop us from working hard to make arrests, and ultimately see a man jailed for his involvement.”
