The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee: Where to watch the flypast in Essex on the Queen’s Jubilee Weekend

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee the weekend is fast approaching with Brits set to celebrate the special occasion in a number of ways. The Queen, 96, will celebrate her 70 years on the throne by watching a stunning flypast that’s due to travel over parts of Essex.

Swathes of people are also expected to visit London to commemorate the special occasion, as well as hosting street parties up and down the country. The flypast is due to happen on Thursday, June 2 – the start of the bumper four-day weekend – with a mesmerising display of military aircrafts performing tricks over the south and east of England. The Red Arrows, which are set to perform for the Clacton Airshow in August, are also expected to be taking to the skies on the special day.

The Queen is set to soak in the event from the Buckingham Palace balcony with other members of the Royal Family. The flight path is set to travel over Colchester and Southend. It is expected that residents in Southend can see the flyover at around 12.30pm until 1.15pm on June 2.

According to the I, it will start in the vicinity of the Wash, and travel over the North Sea, Southwold, parts of Suffolk and Southend. The fly-past will then head to London via Swaffham, Thetford and Colchester, before flying over Buckingham Palace. The dispersal will occur to the south and west of the London control zone over Kent, Surrey, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire.

It’ll be vital for Essex residents to pick their vantage point carefully. Southend’s beach and promenade is potentially a prime spot to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the celebration with, hopefully, some warm weather and sunshine, as well as Colchester’s town centre.

Colchester has been awarded city status as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Named one of eight towns to be made cities to mark the Queen’s 70 years on the throne, Colchester will follow Southend-on-Sea and Chelmsford in gaining city status. A town becomes a city only by the award of a royal charter – not, as is sometimes thought, because it has a cathedral.

The newly-appointed city had previously bid to become a city in 1992 and 2000, which was withdrawn following public consultation, and also in 2002 and 2012 – but these attempts were unsuccessful. The Mayor of Colchester, Cllr Robert Davidson, said: “On behalf of everyone in Colchester, I would like to thank Her Majesty for this wonderful honour in her Platinum Jubilee year.”
