Confectionery heir Cosmo Fry and son Orson once fought to save holiday home in a game of dice

EMILY PRESCOTT: How confectionery heir Cosmo Fry and his son Orson once fought to save their south of France holiday home in a game of dice

I’m not saying the Fry family is reckless when it comes to wagers, but head of the confectionery dynasty Cosmo and his son Orson once found themselves fighting to save their holiday home in the south of France in a game of dice.

Cosmo, who introduced the ancient Peruvian dice game of Perudo to England in 1982, put the house up as a prize when they both took on a complete novice – who promptly won three games and knocked Cosmo out of the contest.

Amazingly, Orson pulled it back and the house is still in the family!

The 25-year-old, pictured with model girlfriend Alexa Chung, now wants to boost the game’s popularity and recently organised a tournament at the Pelican pub in Notting Hill. Roll up…

Kate digs in for a battle

Banking heiress Kate Rothschild has upset the neighbours over her fresh attempts to build a basement extension to her £3.5 million South-West London mansion.

Kate, 39, and her entrepreneur boyfriend Paul Forkan, 32, who welcomed a baby boy last year, have revived plans to create a games area, TV and media room, home office and study at their Edwardian property in leafy Barnes.

But seven angry neighbours have objected over the risk of flooding, while a nearby care home for people with mental health issues say its residents will be subject to too much noise.

Neighbours also say that Kate hasn’t improved on the original application, which was rejected last year.

Planners are expected to make a decision next month.

He may be a multi-millionaire but Live Aid organiser Bob Geldof is still pretty down to earth when it comes to holidays.

I spotted the 70-year-old Boomtown Rats singer heading back from Nice last week on easyJet.

But at least the legend treated himself to speedy boarding…
