AFC Wimbledon are considering former Crewe Alexandra boss David Artell for the vacant managerial role.
The South London Press understand that Artell was set to have an interview today [Thursday] with the club.
The 41-year-old ex-Gibraltar international spent five seasons with the Railwaymen, where he guided the club to automatic promotion to League One during the 2019-20 season.
Despite finishing 12th in their first season in the third tier, Artell was sacked after Crewe’s relegation to League Two was confirmed this season.
After Crewe’s relegation was confirmed, Artell told the club’s official website: “It is a sad day for everyone associated with the club, and it doesn’t matter what I say to the players at the moment. It has happened for various reasons, culminating in what has happened today.
“The supporters are entitled to their opinion, and that comes with being the manager. I am the one right in the firing line, and I understand that. I can only apologise to the fans for the season we have had because it has been a season to forget. Across the board, we have not been good enough, and I’m top of the tree.”
The Dons had their list of candidates shortened last weekend after Mark Bowen, who was given the job at the end of last season following the departure of Mark Robinson, accepted a role higher up the football pyramid.
Nesta Guinness-Walker, Ben Heneghan and Cheye Alexander are yet to have their futures resolved, with the trio out of contract at the end of the season. While academy graduate Anthony Hartigan is set to leave the club after rejecting the offer of a new contract.
Jack Rudoni is expected to leave the club this summer for a record fee.
