Westminster Abbey ‘bomb threat’: Huge cordon in place from Trafalgar Square after ‘controlled explosions’

A number of roads have been closed this afternoon after police were called to reports of a ‘suspicious vehicle’ near Westminster Abbey. Officers from the Met say they are in the vicinity of the church dealing with the ongoing incident. Eyewitnesses are also reporting two ‘controlled explosions’ took place at the incident.

The vehicle is believed to be in Broad Sanctuary, and the road is closed by the junction with Great Smith Street near the church, according to Transport for London. Bridge Street is closed westbound at Victoria Embankment, Whitehall is closed at Trafalgar Square and diverted traffic is slow in Lambeth Place Road, Horseferry Road and on the approaches to Trafalgar Square and Pall Mall, also according to TfL.

Two Tube stations are also closed while officers deal with the incident – Westminster and St James’s Park. A spokesperson for the Met told MyLondon: “Police are at currently in the vicinity of Westminster Abbey dealing with an ongoing incident involving what is believed to be a suspicious vehicle. A number of road closures are in place while emergency services deal with the incident.”
