Fulham finish top of Championship as Aleksandar Mitrovic breaks goalscoring record

Fulham have confirmed themselves as Champions of the Championship with a 7-0 victory over Luton Town on Monday, with Aleksandar Mitrovic breaking the record for the most goals scored in one season of the Championship in England. The Whites had already sealed their place in the Premier League last month, returning at the first time of asking.

Six different goalscorers got in on the act at Craven Cottage, with Tom Cairney and Kenny Tete both scoring early into the first half. Bobby Reid, Fabio Carvalho and Jean Michael Seri all found the net too, while Mitrovic scored a brace to seal an emphatic victory.

The Serbian fired home his 42nd and 43rd goals of the season, beating Guy Whittingham’s record for the most goals in the second division in one season. His final goal means that the Whites have now scored 106 goals this campaign – with one game still remaining.

Manager Marco Silva, who has had previous stints at Watford, Hull and Everton in the Premier League, has masterminded the return to the top flight. The Portuguese coach managed to keep hold of key players such as Mitrovic and youngster Fabio Carvalho – who has been linked with a move to Liverpool – while he strengthened by signing the likes of Harry Wilson from the Reds.

While they will surely celebrate for the foreseeable future, the challenge next season will be survival. The club have notoriously bounced between relegation and promotion in recent years, and next campaign will look to break that pattern by staying up.

Silva does, however, believe his side are better equipped for the challenge ahead: “We got the promotion earlier in the season, which I think will be a good help for us to prepare in the right way, because the next pre-season will be really important for us.

“Now is a moment for us to keeping working for the next four games, but we are already working and preparing well for the next season. The challenge is huge, but we want to be there and we worked so hard to achieve it. We have to be really positive and not go into the season with this concern on our mind, we have to go with full desire and ambition.”

A lot of work may have to be put in for them to achieve that goal, however the summer transfer window may be an indicator as to how far they can go to pursue survival. For now though, the party will continue to rage on by the River Thames.
