Mitcham artist and filmmaker Michael. wins this year’s Jerwood/FVU moving–image Award – South London News


Michael. is a Mitcham artist-filmmaker and community youth worker, and winner of this year’s Jerwood/FVU moving–image Award.

He wins £25,000 artist commission and is set to showcase his ground breaking, large-scale moving-image installation cleave to the Black at Jerwood Space in South London from May 7 – July 23. Admission is free.

Michael. was born and raised in Mitcham to Caribbean parents and formally known as Michael McLeod, but has since dropped his surname due to its historic colonial context and replaced it with a full stop.

Michael. is also a much loved community youth worker at Pollards Hill and Phipps Bridge Youth Centres in Merton.

Michael.’s work explores the poetics of blackness and being and his Jerwood commission depicts the legacy of the black male experience and has been made in close dialogue with a group of black men from different London communities, cleave to the Black is a work of authentic, personal expression and evocative, atmospheric poetry.

Michael. said: “Being a recipient of the 2022 Jerwood/FVU Award has meant that I’ve had the time to create and the space to create. It has given me support from two organisations and from individuals who have backed me, like I’ve never had before. Jerwood Arts and FVU really care about supporting artists through their creative journey.”
