London bus strike: Bus drivers across Croydon, Brixton, Norwood and Thornton Heath to strike for three days across 30 routes

4

A total of 30 bus routes will be out of action again this May as another strike is planned due to an ongoing pay dispute. Around 1,000 drivers at Croydon, Brixton, Norwood and Thornton Heath bus garages will not sign on for their shifts for three days. It follows a two-day strike that took place at the end of March.

The striking drivers have been offered a three per cent pay rise offer by employer Arriva London, which they believe is unacceptable as inflation is currently around eight per cent. The offer is double the initial 1.5 per cent Arriva put forward prior to the first round of strikes. Bus drivers are not directly employed by Transport for London (TfL) under the current franchising system so do not receive the 8.4 per cent pay rise Mayor Sadiq Khan agreed to earlier this year.

Unite union regional officer John Murphy said: “The bus strikes scheduled for May will undoubtedly cause disruption and delays across London but this dispute is a direct result of Arriva’s high-handed treatment of its drivers. Further strikes can still be avoided provided that Arriva returns to the negotiating table and makes an improved offer that members find acceptable.”

Most of the disruption will centre around South London and the northern fringes of Surrey, particularly Croydon and Norwood where many of the Arriva-operated TfL routes run. Unite also claims that ongoing service cuts to the TfL bus network are reducing driver earnings as there are fewer services for them to operate.

When will the strikes take place?

The initial 24-hour strike will take place on Wednesday, May 11. Following that, there will be a 48-hour strike from Monday, May 16, to Tuesday, May 17.
