Arsenal news: Ian Wright singles out unsung hero as Paul Scholes calls Mikel Arteta a disgrace

Here is your Arsenal morning digest for Monday, April 25.

Elneny praise

Arsenal hero Ian Wright has heaped praise on Mohamed Elneny following the Gunners’ 3-1 win over Manchester United. Speaking on BBC Match of the Day, Wright said: “Xhaka was magnificent, Odegaard did his stuff again, but Elneny – for someone that last played before Chelsea was in December – he came in today…dependable, professional, he never lets the team down.

“He had the most passes today and the most interceptions, he just gets himself in the right position. He’s the kind of player, he wants to pass forward.

“He’s somebody who kept the ball going and kept Arsenal going. He’s the kind of player – and he may leave – you come in when you haven’t played for so long and he’s been magnificent.”

Scholes’ scathing verdict

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has called Mikel Arteta a disgrace for the way he approached the referee during Arsenal’s win against the Red Devils on Saturday afternoon. Speaking on Premier League Productions, the former England international said: “At the time, I thought it was offside.

“I didn’t really think of the foul, to be honest. That brings into question whether it’s a clear and obvious error, which is the only reason it should go to the VAR.

“It’s a coming together, of course, it is.” Scholes then went on to lament Arsenal boss Arteta, who walked in front of referee Craig Pawson to complain before the official awarded the Spaniard’s side the penalty.

Scholes added: “I think Arteta is a disgrace there. He shouldn’t be allowed to do that.

“If you see it again, he actually goes to the crowd to try and influence the referee a little. All the players around them as well.

“That shouldn’t be allowed. But it’s a little bit clumsy from Telles.”

Abraham move

Arsenal are reportedly ready to offer AS Roma £50million for Tammy Abraham. The Gunners are in need of a top-class centre-forward this summer and The Daily Star have now claimed that the north London club will try and sign former Chelsea star Abraham if they can secure a top-four finish this season.

Mikel Arteta’s side currently sit fourth in the Premier League table, two points above local rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who they will play next month.
