The gorgeous South London riverside walk with pubs every few miles

9

The weather has been glorious in London lately (minus the brief snow showers we had), so what better way to enjoy the Bank Holiday than to head out for a walk?

And we’ve got just the ticket. Winding through the neighbourhoods of South London is the River Wandle. Following the river is the 12.5 mile Wandle Trail perfect for a long spring walk.

It rises in Croydon and runs through Sutton and Merton before joining the Thames in Wandsworth. There you can watch the seasons change as the water flows by.

The cherry on top of this great day out is that every few miles you’ll be able to find a pub for a spot of refreshment. Beyond the boozing there are some interesting things to see such as the Merton Abbey Mills, where an open air market is held every weekend.

There you can also see one of the few remaining water wheels, which used to line the river. Due to its industrial use, the river was once known as one of the dirtiest in the city.

Nowadays thanks to hard work from people looking to improve the environment, brown trout have returned and other fish are thriving. Deen City Farm is also well worth the visit. It’s a working community farm with a good range of animals including alpacas.

Admission is free but the farm relies on donations so if you do enjoy it, give what you can. Getting to the trail is easy enough as it starts at East Croydon station and ends near Wandsworth Town station.

On the way it passes near Earlsfield and Haydons Road railway stations as well as Colliers Wood and Morden Underground stations. This means if you only want to walk a short section, that’s perfectly doable.

The Wandle is a corner of London often overlooked by walkers but with its rich heritage, pretty nature and good pubs. You’d be a fool to miss it.
