East Croydon live: Updates as person hit by train between Croydon and Streatham blocking lines

A person has been hit by a train between East Croydon and Streatham this evening (Tuesday, April 12). As a result, all lines are blocked between these stations while emergency services work to deal with the incident.

London Ambulance Service were called at 6:55pm today to reports of an incident at Thornton Heath Railway Station in Thornton Heath. An ambulance crew, a medic in a car, an advanced paramedic and an incident response officer attended the scene, where a person was pronounced dead.

Southern Rail posted the news on social media at 6.56pm, saying: “It is with great sadness that we report a person has been hit by a train between East Croydon and Streatham.”

Trains between East Croydon and Streatham Common are currently not running. Passengers are advised to delay travelling until later this evening or at least allow plenty of extra time to complete their journey and check journey planners, which are being updated in real-time, ahead of setting off.

Otherwise, they can use their tickets at no extra costs on London Underground via any reasonable route, London Buses between East Croydon and Central London and Thameslink via any reasonable route. Where possible, trains will also divert via Crystal Palace or Forest Hill.

Social media users have expressed their concern and sadness at the news, with on writing, “Very sad. And awful for the driver,” and another adding, “So sorry to hear this.”
