BREAKING NEWS: Rotherhithe Tunnel closed after massive electrical fire breaks out

The London Fire Brigade said the whole of the DLR, the Blackwall Tunnel and Limehouse Link have all also been closed because of the fire

The Rotherhithe Tunnel has been closed off after a fire broke out at an electrical substation this afternoon (Tuesday, March 29).

The London Fire Brigade said the whole of the Docklands Light Railway, the Blackwall Tunnel and Limehouse Link have all also been closed because of the fire at the substation on Castor Lane in Poplar, east London.

Part of the ground floor of a two-storey electrical substation was alight as of Tuesday afternoon, and a 25-metre cordon is in place as a precaution. Around 100 people were evacuated from a depot next door and 1,500 students were evacuated from a college at the rear of the substation.

The fire is also causing power outages which could affect around 38,000 customers, according to station commander Colin Digby, speaking from the scene.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
