Tottenham news: Mario Hermoso linked with Spurs and hierarchy hopeful that Harry Kane will stay

Here is your Tottenham Hotspur morning digest for Saturday, April 16.

Hermoso on Tottenham’s ‘radar’

Tottenham are reportedly interested in signing Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso this summer. Spurs are expected to strengthen their backline ahead of the new season and are thought to be keen on adding a left-footed centre-back to their ranks.

According to The Daily Mail, Hermoso is on their radar with the 26-year-old struggling to hold down a place in Diego Simeone’s starting XI. The report also states that Spurs are keeping tabs on RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol and Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni, but both players are expected to cost considerably more.

Hermoso joined Atletico from Espanyol in 2019 and has made 93 appearances for the club, but the arrival of Reinildo Mandava in January has seen his game-time limited. And it’s believed that Spanish side are open to selling him with his contract expiring in two years’ time.

Berbatov on Spurs

Dimitar Berbatov has spoken out about Tottenham’s consistency and pressure, as the top four race continues. Antonio Conte’s side are currently fourth in the league, three points ahead of Arsenal, who do have a game in hand.

Since the Italian’s arrival, there have been major improvements to individual performances, but also the team displays. The Lilywhites need to have a strong final month or so of the season, to help them secure Champions League football for the next campaign.

Just a few months ago Tottenham were on an inconsistent run of form and sat seventh in the league. Now they have found some consistency and are six points ahead of seventh-placed Manchester United.

Arsenal have not finished above Spurs since the 2015/16 season and the rivalry between the two north London clubs means they have competition when they play each other, but also the desire to finish above one another. However, in an exclusive interview with football.london last month, ex-Tottenham striker and Betfair Ambassador Dimitar Berbatov gave his verdict on the rivalry and pressure.

Spurs still hopeful Kane will stay

Harry Kane has been back to his best for Tottenham in recent games, but that hasn’t stopped questions being raised over his future in north London. The England captain had a slow start to the season after the disappointment of losing to Italy in the final of Euro 2020, which was followed by his strong transfer links with Manchester City.

Kane has now scored 22 goals and registered nine assists in 43 appearances, breaking records and continuing his solid partnership with Son Heung-min. Spurs are currently fourth in the Premier League and in a good position in the battle for a spot in the top four.

Antonio Conte has led his side to victories in their last four matches and will hope they can continue that winning streak when they welcome Brighton to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday. All Spurs can do is continue getting their own good results and hope teams around them drop points, so they can secure Champions League football for next season.

There are a number of reasons why there has been speculation around Kane’s future at Tottenham, most notably the lack of silverware. Spurs have now gone 14 years since they last won a trophy and for a world-class player like the striker, that may be a problem.
