London Underground: All the Tube closures over Easter weekend

Londoners are being warned to expect travel “chaos” over the Easter Bank Holiday Weekend, after Transport for London (TfL) announced a number of closures will take place on the network. Parts of the Northern and Piccadilly Lines, and the entire Hammersmith and City Line will be closed. The news comes in the wake of travel disruption caused by tube strikes throughout March.

Andy Lord, TfL’s chief operating officer, who said they are seeing “more and more” customers using the tubes again, advised people to check their journeys. He said: “I’d encourage customers to check before they travel as there are some closures, but the majority of the public transport network will be open over the Easter weekend, meaning people can enjoy everything the capital has to offer.”

Northern Line

Most of the central section of the Northern Line, including the new Branch line running to Battersea Power Station, will be closed next Friday (April 15) and Saturday (April 16). The Northern line will be shut between Charing Cross, Battersea Power Station and Stockwell on April 15-16, and its Bank branch will be closed between Euston and Moorgate.

Northern Line trains will continue to run to and from Charing Cross in central London, and between Stockwell and Morden in South London. The Northern Line closures are due to test trains being run along the new section of the line at Bank for the first time.

Piccadilly Line

There will be no Piccadilly line trains running to and from Heathrow Airport over the East bank holiday weekend either. The line will be closed between Acton Town and Heathrow, and Rayners Lane and Uxbridge, from Friday April 15 to Monday April 18, due to engineering work on the tracks and drains forming part of the Piccadilly Line upgrade.

Anyone looking to get to Heathrow via public transport is advised to use TfL Rail or the Heathrow Express train service which runs from Paddington.

Hammersmith and City Line

There will be no service at all on the Hammersmith and City line for all of the four-day weekend, due to engineering work on the tracks.

District Line

The District Line will be closed between Tower Hill and West Ham, and from Earl’s Court to Kensington (Olympia) for the entire four-day Easter weekend, so that the temporary ticket hall at Whitechapel can be removed. Between Turnham Green and Richmond will also be closed on Easter Sunday (April 17) for engineering work by Network Rail.
