Joseph Jeremy and Lewis Aquilina to be sentenced for murder

Two teenagers who randomly murdered an innocent dad as he walked down the street will today learn how long they will spend behind bars. Joseph Jeremy and Lewis Aquilina launched a savage attack on 26-year-old Ryan O’Connor before stealing his Gucci bag and laughing as he lay dying in a pool of blood. Mr O’Connor suffered five stab wounds – including one which pierced his left lung and his heart. Two knives, including a 15-inch hunting knife, were found inside a stolen Ford Fiesta and a third knife was found near the crime scene in Newport. Phones seized from the defendants’ phones revealed damning footage, including a video of Jeremy chasing a boy with a knife, shouting “I’ve got a knife”.

Jeremy, 18, of no fixed abode, and Aquilina, 20, of Riverside, Cardiff, denied murdering Mr O’Connor but were found guilty following a trial at Newport Crown Court last month. A judge has already warned Jeremy and Aquilina that they will face a mandatory life sentence. However, what today’s sentencing hearing will establish is what their minimum term will be.
