An urgent hunt has been launched for a dog who was stolen from its owners’ van in North London. The adorable poodle was stolen last week in Edmonton.
Gintare, 36, described the terrifying moment she realised Smaila was gone. She said: “I walked to the car, my husband opened the van, and I realised the door was open. I saw the empty seat, and I just started screaming.I was screaming, ‘My dog is stolen!’, but no one could understand because I was in such a big panic.” The family immediately went to their local police station, but Gintare was so overwhelmed that she fainted in the police station.
Gintare, who lives with her husband and daughter in Enfield, bought Smaila, a female toy red poodle, from Lithuania for her daughter’s 11th birthday. She said: “She was always begging me ‘Mommy, I want a doggy, I’m alone’ She’s the only child in the family, so we decided on the birthday present surprise.” Gintare describes her as “part of the family”.

Eventually, the shop found the CCTV of the robbery at Holland Bazaar Ltd on Eley Road, which the family have not been able to watch.
She said: “Since those five days, I haven’t eaten properly, I haven’t slept properly, and I can’t remember things because of the stress. Smaila is our little girl.” The family is extremely grateful for all the support they have received online, especially that from DogLost, a charity reuniting lost dogs.
Tomorrow will mark a week since Smaila was taken on March 30. Gintare and her family say they miss her more each day. “We really really love her. She was sleeping with me and my husband in our bed every night, between the two of us.
“She was coming every morning, jumping on my head and scratching me to wake me up, nibbling my ears, running to my daughter’s room to wake her up from school. She’s adorable, she never caused any trouble at home.”
“And she went everywhere with us,” Gintare added. “We never leave her anywhere, we took her everywhere.” She explained that her daughter has felt scared “everywhere” ever since Smaila was stolen.
She stressed that dogs being stolen should be taken more seriously. “I’m realising that you know there are so many dogs being stolen in this country, and there’s nothing happening. It’s not just mine lost, you know? Look at those Facebook groups [for finding lost dogs], you can see how many people have lost their family.”
Smaila, who has a white beard and white spots on her neck, is microchipped, meaning not all hope is lost for the devastated family.
Enfield police shared the appeal for Smaila on their Twitter page. They wrote: “Help needed. Stolen from a van on Wednesday, 30 March 2022 whilst parked at Holland Bazaar Ltd #EleyRoad #N18. If you have any info please call 101 quoting ref 5208887/22. CCTV will be released in due course.”
