A teenager was found guilty of murder after stabbing a 19-year-old in front of his family in Sydenham last year. Romello Harley, 19, was convicted today (March 21) of stabbing Tashawn Watt to death on June 25 2021 in South London. Officers established Harley had been involved in an argument with Tashawn’s relative prior to the attack.
Harley was asked to leave but returned with a knife and attempted to lure Tashawn into an alleyway. When Tashawn refused, Harley stabbed the teenager in front of his family shortly before dropping the knife and running away. The attack was caught on CCTV.

Despite the best efforts of emergency services, Tashawn, known as Tata by friends and family, died at the scene from a stab wound to the chest as his mother begged him to wake up. Harley went into hiding but on June 28, he handed himself in at Lewisham Police Station and was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Tata’s mother, Denise Campbell, previously told MyLondon : “I swear it’s ruined my life. It’s tearing me to pieces. The image I saw of Tata on the ground. The lady was pumping his chest. I’m screaming and they were trying to take me away from him. I’m throwing them away. I’m saying: ‘Tata. Please don’t leave me. Please stay with me son, just hold on Tata just hold on. Tata mummy loves you.'”

She added: “Then I got mad with him because I could see he was leaving me and I shouted: ‘Tata wake up. Don’t do this Tata, wake up. Listen to mummy’s voice.’ I remember him flickering. Looking up. His eyes flickered, I’m telling you, he heard. He died with his brother who held him in his arms and laid him on the floor.”
Detective Chief Inspector Chris Wood, who led the investigation, said: “My thoughts remain with Tashawn’s family as they continue to come to terms with the loss of their loved one in such awful and needless circumstances.
“I am pleased that as a result of our investigation we have delivered justice for them by ensuring the person responsible for Tashawn’s killing will spend a considerable time behind bars.”
