Jamie Carragher makes bold Arsenal Champions League claim ahead of Crystal Palace problem

Jamie Carragher has claimed that Arsenal can send a message to their top four rivals by beating Crystal Palace on Monday night. Mikel Arteta’s side relinquished fourth spot in the Premier League after Tottenham thumped Newcastle 5-1 on Sunday.

However, a draw or a win for the Gunners would see them reclaim the coveted final Champions League spot with a game in hand over their north London rivals. West Ham also closed the gap on Arsenal to three points thanks to their 2-1 win over Everton, however, they’ve played three more games.

Manchester United could only muster a 1-1 draw at home to Leicester City but still remain in the hunt for fourth spot. And Carragher believes Arteta’s side can lay down a real marker in the race for Champions League football by winning at Selhurst Park.

“It’s big because it’s one of those games their rivals which are United, maybe West Ham but certainly Tottenham will be looking at and think ‘they could maybe drop points’,” Carragher said in the build-up to the game on Monday Night Football.

“So I think if Arsenal could win here tonight it wouldn’t just be the three points but it would be the message it sends out to the rivals who are looking if they can drop points tonight.”

The Liverpool legend also claimed that it will ultimately be Arsenal and Spurs who contest fourth spot. The two sides will meet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on May 12 in a clash that could well decide which team claims a seat at European football’s top table next season.

He added: “It’s a big game but they’re going to be like that between now and the end of the season and it’s going to be really exciting, but I do think it’s now going to be down to the two north London clubs.”
