Soho gas leak live: Updates as gas main ruptures and 400 people evacuated in central London

A major gas leak in a central London shopping district has seen several shopping streets around Oxford Street cordoned off this afternoon (Monday, April 4).

Poland Street, Berwick Street, Oxford Street, Noel Street, Wardour Street and Great Marlborough Street in Soho were all cordoned off by emergency services at around 1.05pm, after a gas main “ruptured” at ground level.

Around 400 residents and staff were evacuated from buildings in the area, according to the London Fire Brigade (LFB).

One eyewitness reported “a concerning amount of police, fire engines and ambulances” in the area following the incident.

The LFB have confirmed the gas main has now been made safe by engineers who isolated the leak, but “crews remain on scene standing by while gas levels reduce.”

No injuries were reported following the gas leak.
