UK weather: Met Office issues yellow warning for snow and ice

A yellow weather warning has been issued for snow, ice and hail for large parts of the UK for Saturday morning.

The warning will come into affect from midnight until 10am and is set to bring cold weather to the Midlands, Yorkshire and the North East of England.

Travel disruption is possible in the affected areas and people could be at risk of injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.

A Met Office spokeswoman said: “Wintry showers will continue overnight Friday and into Saturday leading to icy patches, particularly on untreated surfaces.

“Some accumulations of snow are also possible, particularly across hillier areas of northeast England. 1-3 cm accumulations are possible mainly above 200 m for parts of Northumberland and the North York Moors.

“The odd covering is possible to lower levels but this is likely to be short lived.”

Speaking abut today’s weather BBC weather forecaster Chris Fawkes said: “Cold start to the morning with a widespread and sharp frost and where we have seen showers overnight that will certainly lead to some icy surfaces around eastern areas, notably in parts of Kent where we could also see some fairly significant snow overnight and the early part of Friday morning.”

The Environment Agency has also issued two flood warnings and one flood alert for areas along the River Thames.

Flooding is “expected” at Coalhouse Point on the river in Essex, and is “possible” in the areas between Putney Bridge and Teddington Weir in west London.
