M4 traffic updates as lorry fire damaged the carriageway – recap

The charred remains of a lorry trailer were left at the scene of a HGV fire this morning (March 29). Two lanes were closed London-bound between junction 16 at Swindon and junction 17 at Chippenham.

At its peak there were 5.7 miles of congestion, according to National Highways. Emergency services were at the scene and officials have confirmed the carriageway and hard shoulder has been “considerably damaged” due to the flames.

A statement from National Highways said at the time: “The M4 in Wiltshire has delays of over one hour westbound between J16 (Swindon) and J17 (Chippenham) due to a vehicle fire. Lanes 1 and 2 are currently closed. There is currently 5.7 miles of congestion on approach to the lane closure.

“Emergency services and Recovery are on scene. The fire has caused considerable damage to the carriageway and the hard shoulder and lane 1 are likely to need resurfacing. Road users are advised to plan their journeys in advance, allow extra time and consider alternative routes if possible.”
