The McDonald’s that’s become one of the most photographed places in London

There are in total 181 McDonald’s branches in London, with just under 1,300 across the UK. Despite all appearing the same, each individual branch has its own story to tell, and we all have unique memories of attending children’s birthday parties at our local restaurant growing up.

But one particular McDonald’s branch in North London has long been attracting attention for a different reason. There’s just something about this particular restaurant in Islington that turns heads and causes everyone to take a second look.

On first appearances, the McDonald’s branch on 23 Highgate Hill, Archway doesn’t really stand out. It looks very much the same as any other McDonald’s restaurant. However, those who have a keen eye for detail will notice a small oddity on the corner of the building.

Just right of the entrance to the restaurant, sitting right under the two golden arches of the McDonald’s symbol, is a sign that says MacDonald Road. A simple coincidence, yes, but Londoners can’t help but stop and take pictures when they notice it.

The comments that often accompany the pictures when shared on social media are just as funny, with many admitting to being amused everytime they pass by. “McDonald’s in Archway being on ‘Macdonald Road’ amuses me every time I pass it,” one said.

Another person said: “Only just realised that the McDonald’s at Archway is on McDonald road, I like that”.

“A McDonald’s on MacDonald Road. Which came first?” asked one, while someone else commented “McDonald’s in Archway is at the junction of Highgate Hill and MacDonald Road. Coincidence?”

One person tweeted: “Today I found out that the McDonalds in Archway in situated on MacDonald Road. I don’t know what to do with this information.”

On Instagram, one person sharing a photo of the restaurant had just one word to say: “Irony”.

Responding to the caption, another user commented: “Everyone says that about that road it’s hilarious and I’ve lived in the area for 17 years”.

“Burger me! Shame it’s not monopoly real estate,” said another.

Unfortunately for this branch, it doesn’t have the best reviews on TripAdvisor, with just a three-star rating out of five, but either way, it makes a great landmark to visit and take a snapshot when passing by.
