Man, 22, arrested on suspicion of murder of student, 19, at university halls

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and assault by police investigating the death of a teenage student in university halls.

Maher Maaroufe has been arrested on suspicion of the crimes following the death of Sabita Thanwani, 19, at student accommodation in Clerkenwell, central London, Scotland Yard said.

Metropolitan Police say her family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Officers were called to the scene at around 5.10am on Saturday to reports of a woman suffering serious injuries.

Police and medics attended but the woman, who was a student at City, University of London, was pronounced dead.

A Unite Students spokesman added: “Our priority at this time is the safety and wellbeing of students at Arbour House.”

Police say Maaroufe was arrested in Clerkenwell on Sunday and is currently in custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Linda Bradley who leads the investigation said: “I would like to thank everyone for publicising and sharing our appeal to trace Maaroufe.

“Sabita’s family have been updated with this development and continue to be supported by specially trained officers. Our deepest condolences are with them.

“I would ask everyone to respect their privacy at this indescribably devastating time for them as they come to terms with Sabita’s murder.”
