William Saliba has already delivered five-word verdict on his Arsenal future amid contract news

Arsenal defender William Saliba was called up to the French national side for the first time on Monday after an impressive loan spell with Marseille in Ligue 1, once again sparking a conversation over his future at the Emirates.

As previously reported by football.london, the Gunners are planning discussions over a new contract with the 20-year-old come the end of the season, although it remains to be seen what the player’s stance will be. Saliba has been an ever-present under Jorge Sampaoli with Marseille and is yet to make a first-team appearance for Arsenal despite signing in 2019.

Saliba was first sent back on loan to Saint-Etienne after completing his £30 million transfer to Arsenal. The following campaign saw Nice take the centre-back on loan before Marseille brought him to the Stade Velodrome for the 2021-22 campaign.

But he has previously given a coy five-word verdict on his future plans. Speaking to RTL, via The Daily Star, after the game Saliba responded to a question about his Arsenal future, saying: “I prefer not to speak about my future,” before adding “but I’m very good here [Marseille]. I don’t regret my decision. I have been very happy since day one. I have one year here and I am going to give my all.”

Despite joining Arsenal over two years ago, Saliba is yet to make his first-team debut with the club, having spent other loan spells with Saint Etienne and Nice. The Gunners faithful have long been calling for head coach Mikel Arteta to give him a chance and the Spaniard has previously confirmed that the club are monitoring the youngster’s progress with Marseille.

“Yes, as a club we are always in touch,” Arteta said back in October after the Frenchman’s outstanding performance against Paris-Saint Germain. “Edu and Ben [Knapper] were there to watch him and keep a close eye on him, the progress he’s making. He’s obviously our player and we do that with all the loan players that we have.”

Saliba has also impressed with the France Under-21 side in recent weeks, captaining them four times this year.
