Rainham fire live: Updates as 70 firefighters tackle blaze at car showroom with smoke billowing into sky

Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters have rushed to a fire at a car showroom and workshop in Rainham in East London.

Images from the scene show thick black smoke billowing into the sky, which can be seen from across the river in Erith.

The fire is in a scrapyard on New Road consisting of 15 motor vehicles. A number of gas cylinders are also involved so a hazard zone has been set up as some cylinders can explode when exposed to heat.

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) is advising people in the area to close their doors and windows.

Firefighters were called at 10.19am. Fire crews from Dagenham, Hornchurch, Wennington, Erith, Stratford, Harold Hill and Plaistow fire stations are at the scene. Firefighters from Essex and Kent are also assisting us at the incident.

The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.
