Filling up our cars has become a costly exercise of late. Prices at forecourts up and down the country have seen prices rocket in recent weeks.
It’s not uncommon to be paying over £1.50 a litre for unleaded, and drivers are feeling the pinch during this cost of living crisis. Fuel costs have largely jumped as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but the prices were already creeping up well before that.
There are ways you can save yourself money. By opting in to a loyalty scheme, drivers can earn “points” or rewards which then turn into money off your fuel. You can also use your loyalty card for a number of supermarkets which have petrol stations on site.

For example, Tesco shoppers can collect Clubcard points on fuel at all Tesco petrol stations and all Esso petrol stations with a Tesco Express on site. When paying for your fuel, just present your paper or digital voucher to the cashier. To collect Clubcard points you just need to tap your Clubcard at the Checkout or on the “PayatPump” terminal. Drivers will collect one point for every £3 of fuel.
For now though, we’ve used confused.com’s petrol comparison tool and found the top 10 cheapest stations for unleaded and diesel. They’re based in and around Hertfordshire although, due to the way their search tool works, does venture into London from time-to-time.
