Tottenham are expected to seriously consider trying to sign Inter Milan defender Stefan de Vrij this summer, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The centre-back has spent the last four years in Milan, but Spurs may look to tempt him to north London when the transfer window re-opens.

What’s the latest news involving de Vrij?

It is understood that Antonio Conte is keen to be reunited with de Vrij at Tottenham, who has previously labelled the Italian coach a “born winner“. The pair worked together at Inter for two years, and helped the team win Serie A in 2021.

The Dutch international is out of contract in 2023, and it has been reported that Spurs are trying to wrap up a deal for de Vrij.

It has been claimed that the Premier League outfit would be willing to offer him a four-year contract to move to England.

What has Jones said about de Vrij potentially moving to Tottenham?

Jones believes Tottenham’s sporting director Fabio Paratici will be working to get a deal over the line in the coming months.

Although de Vrij turned 30 last month, Jones still thinks the £40.5m-rated defender could thrive in the Premier League for years to come.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “I think right now, looking to the next 18 months, two years, they’ll be seriously looking at de Vrij. He’s still got all the traits to be a top defender in the Premier League.”

Should Tottenham be targeting de Vrij?

There can be no doubting de Vrij’s pedigree as he has won a league title in Italy plus picked up 55 international caps for the Netherlands.

One thing to consider, though, is that his specialist role for Inter has been playing as the central defender in a back three.

This position is currently occupied by Eric Dier at Tottenham, who has a case for being his team’s most consistent defender this season.

Taking Dier out of the team to accommodate de Vrij would be harsh on the Englishman, who has become a trusted member of Conte’s side.

Furthermore, Spurs already have Cristian Romero at their disposal, who can also play as the central figure in a back three, having done so at Atalanta in 2020/21 before he arrived at Tottenham.

With this in mind, Tottenham may be better off targeting players who are comfortable playing either side of Dier ahead of next season.
